Lake Maggiore serving board

Lake Maggiore is long, slender and shared by two countries. We trace its shoreline into wood that has lived two centuries, and fill it with resin that stays smooth under your hand.

Tree rings that open into the shape of a lake, in dark brown woodcut style.

The board

A piece of Lake Maggiore,
on your table.

A personalized serving board for the center of the table. You pick the lake; we engrave its shoreline and seal it in resin.

The lake

A lake of two countries.

A few facts about the lake you are about to put on the table.

Lake Maggiore runs for about 65 kilometers from the Italian shores of Piedmont and Lombardy up into Swiss Ticino. Its northern tip reaches Locarno and Ascona; its southern end closes between Arona and Angera, where the Ticino river leaves the lake on its way to the Po.

The outline is long and narrow, widening in front of Stresa and Verbania into the Borromean Gulf, where the three Borromean Islands sit: Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori. It is the shape that anyone who has crossed the lake by ferry carries in their head.

After Lake Garda it is the second-largest lake in Italy, and it has several names: Lago Maggiore in Italian, Verbano in older Italian and Latin usage, Langensee in German. Whatever you call it, the shoreline on the board is the same.

Lakegrains is based in Canzo, in Lombardy. Whether your Lake Maggiore is Stresa, Cannobio, Luino or Locarno, the board carries the same shoreline.

How it's made

From old chestnut to your Lake Maggiore.

Three steps, from old wood to finished board.

  1. 01

    Choose Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore is the lake you pick. Prefer another one? Any European lake is possible on request.

  2. 02

    Engraved line by line

The shoreline of Lake Maggiore is laser engraved into reclaimed antique chestnut from the 1800s, selected for its grain and cut by hand.

  3. 03

    Resin, with or without legs

The engraving is filled with food-safe resin, so the lake stays smooth under your hand. Then you decide: flat on the table, or raised on steel legs.

Details

A Lake Maggiore board, for every kind of table.

Where it fits, and what it is not.

The keepsake

A keepsake of the islands.

Back from Stresa, Cannobio or the Borromean Islands? This is the Lake Maggiore keepsake that lives on the table instead of in a drawer.

The gift

For people with two shores in their memory.

Some know Lake Maggiore from the Italian side, some from the Swiss side, some from both. A gift for anyone whose summers, house or family history are tied to this lake.

Serving, not cutting

Slice in the kitchen.

It is a serving board, not a cutting board. Bring the cheese, the oysters or the dessert to the table on it, flat or on steel legs.

One of a kind

No two boards alike.

The grain of wood from the 1800s never repeats, so no two Lake Maggiore boards are the same.

FAQ

Good questions.

What is the Lake Maggiore serving board?

A serving board in reclaimed antique chestnut from the 1800s, with the shoreline of Lake Maggiore laser engraved and filled with food-safe resin. Every board is one of a kind.

Why is the lake called Maggiore, Verbano and Langensee?

They are the names of the same lake. Maggiore means "greater" in Italian, Verbano comes from the Latin Lacus Verbanus, and Langensee is the German name, literally "long lake".

Can I choose a different lake?

Yes. Lakegrains engraves the most important lake of every European country, plus any other European lake on request, for example Lake Como, Lake Garda or Lake Constance. If yours is missing, get in touch.

Is the resin safe for food?

Yes. The resin is food-safe, so you can serve directly on the board.

Can I cut on it?

No. It is a serving board, not a cutting board. Slice in the kitchen, then bring the cheese, the oysters or the dessert to the table on the board.

Can I use it without the legs?

Of course. Leave the steel legs off and it sits flat on the table; add them and it becomes a raised serving piece.

When can I buy a Lake Maggiore board?

Lakegrains is in pre-launch and the first run is small and limited. Waitlist members hear first, with one email when we open.

Where does Lakegrains come from?

Lakegrains is run by Tecno-System di Paredi Enrico, based in Canzo, in Lombardy, Italy.
